Grounds for election

An historian of post-medieval fortifications. Founded the Medway Military Research Group (1973), a group for the historical research of Chatham Dockyard (1980), was Secretary of the Council for Kentish Archaeology as well as founder (1981) and later chairman of the Fort Amherst and Lines Trust. Has published on the historical defences of the Medway, discovering many new sites, authored consultancy reports on Kentish and Dorset sites, and championed heritage at public enquiries. Has achieved statutory protection for numerous military structures and safeguarded historic ordnance for display. His work has been critical in understanding the defences of the Medway and his role in the restoration of Fort Amherst at Chatham for public access has contributed to an achievement of national and European significance.
