Dr Benson is an expert on historical garden design and its ideologies. She has done case studies on several notable gardens, and recently published a detailed study of the development of the Coton, Northamptonshire, estate, in 'A History of Coton Manor and its Garden' (2015). She has also done important work on the Troy House Estate near Monmouth. (The original house belonged to Blanche Herbert, Lady Troy, Lady Mistress to Elizabeth I.) University of Wales Press will publish her book on this house and its estate in 2016. Her current work is on Charles, Lord Herbert, whose MS 'A briefe memorial of my voyage into France 1673-1674' she is currently transcribing for His Grace the Duke of Beaufort. A full edition will follow. She has been invited to speak at many antiquarian society meetings, by the National Trust and by the Garden History Society. In 2013 she led a course on the use of maps and surveys in garden research at the Institute of Historical Research, University of London.
