* Specialist on the Swahili coast of East Africa and on the trading societies that developed there from the 7th century AD. * Assistant Director at the British Institute in Eastern Africa, 2005-2008. * Awarded a Leverhulme Early Career Research Fellowship, held at the University of Bristol (2008). * Articles in Antiquity (2007), Journal of Social Archaeology (2007), Journal of World Prehistory (2010), Cambridge Archaeological Journal (2012) and the Journal of Anthropological Archaeology (2013). * Monograph: A Material Culture: consumption on the precolonial Swahili coast, Oxford University Press (in press). * Served as editor of Azania, the BIEA archaeological journal for two years (2007 – 8), currently on the editorial board. * General Editor of the BIEA memoir series, and Publications Officer and Trustee on the BIEA governing council. * One of three editors of the Cambridge Monographs in African Archaeology series, published by British Archaeological Reports.
