Grounds for election

Ashok Roy joined the National Gallery Scientific Department in 1977 to work on technical study of the Collection; appointed Scientific Adviser to the Trustees and Head of the Scientific Dept in 1990. His principal interests are the analysis of paintings in support of conservation and the application of technical analysis to solve art-historical problems and to build a material history of European paintings. He has carried out and published practical scientific work on old master paintings across the 700-year span of the Gallery’s Collection. To promote interdisciplinary research between curators, scientists and conservators, he began producing the National Gallery Technical Bulletin in 1978, which he still edits. Co-organiser of five Art in the Making Exhibitions, and a principal contributor to each of their catalogues, he devised and curated Close Examination: Fakes, Mistakes and Discoveries (2010) and Making Colour (2014). He has published over 80 papers and books in his field.
