Grounds for election

Dr Gough taught for thirty years in the English Department of Leicester University (with a year as a visiting lecturer at Dresden University). A lifelong interest in railways and their history led to editorship of the Journal of the Railway & Canal Historical Society, presidency of that society, and a spell as its Publications Committee chairman. A member of the statutory Railway Heritage Committee from its creation until 2009, he was deputy chairman for ten years and Records Sub-committee chairman for twelve years. He was also Chairman of the Railway Study Association (London School of Economics) for nine years. Amongst a wide range of publications on railways past and present his most significant work is The Midland Railway : A Chronology, which remains the basic reference work for anyone studying the development of that company’s infrastructure. Since retirement to York he has been closely involved with York Minster and is the author of the Minster’s official Handbook for Guides.
