Grounds for election

Professor Peter Magee has spent the last 20 years working on the archaeology of south-eastern Arabia, Iran, and Pakistan directing numerous excavations which have greatly increased our knowledge of these areas, and the connections between them, particularly in the Iron Age. He has done much to clarify the origins of the qanat (underground water channels) and the much disputed date and circumstances of the domestication the dromedary. He has also made major contributions to our understanding of the history of metallurgy in Arabia. His recent book, The Archaeology of prehistoric Arabia: social adaptation from the Neolithic to the Iron Age (CUP, 2014) is a tour de force which has been extremely well received, and he is currently editing the Oxford Handbook of Ancient Arabia. He has lectured widely on the history and archaeology of Arabia, Iran and Pakistan and is the author of numerous articles and chapters in books on these and other subjects.
