Grounds for election

David Taylor is Curator of Pictures and Sculpture at the National Trust. He was previously Senior Curator at the National Galleries of Scotland, where he curated the 16th- and 17th-century collections at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. He specialises in early modern British portraiture, and especially in émigré painters in Scotland in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the iconography of Catherine of Braganza, self-fashioning and European consorts, Peter Lely and female patronage in the later seventeenth century. David is a member of the Advisory Council at the Hamilton Kerr Institute (University of Cambridge) and the Tate Collections Committee, and sits on the steering group of the Understanding British portraits subject specialist network (National Portrait Gallery). He has published widely, and has curated a number of exhibitions including on the collection of Sir Peter Lely, John Slezer engravings, the Scottish Enlightenment, Stanley Spencer and Rembrandt.
