Grounds for election
Ramage’s work reflects an intensive study of the past. At Sardis he showed that stones in the Alyattes Tumulus match nothing nearer than Ephesos. His Sources of Lydian Masonry at Sardis, Turkey and his Catalan Vaulting in Advanced Material: New Approaches to Contemporary Compressive Form received awards. He participated in R.Matthews’ Paphlagonia survey: LBA-Byzantine. His recent BA-funded project “mutual influence in Cistercian and Seljuk architecture in the late 12th and early 13th centuries” shows the stimulus provided by years of fieldwork in Turkey where modern/medieval vernacular architecture have roots deep in the past. At Pompeii nicks on corner stones at street intersections show where carts had hit, and thus he could see which streets were one-way, and which were two-way, thereby enabling him to reconstruct the town’s traffic pattern. He knows his architectural canons. Membership would be well-deserved and his insights into the architecture of the past well worth sharing.
