Grounds for election
Dr Casiday is an expert in early Christian monasticism, and also Byzantine history and the reception of Byzantium, as well as relations between Eastern and Western Christianity. His first book, on St John Cassian, comprehensively revised our understanding of Cassian, a crucial bridge between Eastern and Western monasticism and theology. Since his doctorate he has held posts at various universities, including an Early Career Fellowship at Durham, Cambridge, Lampeter, and Cardiff. While at Cambridge he became interested in Anglo-Saxon thought and wrote a number of articles on Aldhelm, especially. More recently his attention has turned to Evagrios, Cassian's mentor, on whom he has written two well-received books. His most recent interests include Boethius, as well as a more general interest in the philosophy of history. He is a distinguished scholar in areas of interest to the Society.
