Grounds for election
Head of Chinese Art at Christies and, from 2000, similar at Bonhams. Masterminded the sale of the cargo of Geldermalsen (sunk 1752) in 1976.Co-author of book on Design and Technological significance of this ceramic cargo. From mid 1970's his career has revolved around the study of Chinese Art. "Pro bono" custodianship of the Percival David Foundation. He has lectured extensively on Chinese Art and Culture - Oriental Ceramic Societies of London, Hong Kong. Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Tokyo, Paris, Amsterdam, Lisbon and Singapore - also at the V.& A., The China Institute in America, Leuvarden, The Hermitage and The Percival David Foundation. Publications: Well over 100 articles, mainly Chinese subjects, for scholarly books and magazines. Significantly: "The Hatcher Porcelain Cargoes" and a ground-breaking study focused on younger students of world ceramics: "Techniques of the World's Great Masters of Pottery & Ceramics."
