Grounds for election

Dr Marta Mirazón Lahr is a specialist in human evolution and prehistory, and, in particular, the evolution of modern humans. She has contributed to the construction, development and testing of the ‘out of Africa model’.She has worked extensively in Africa. She has published on the evolution of modern human diversity, the relationship between archaeological evidence and human dispersals, human genetic diversity, ancient DNA and the prehistory of warfare. She has also worked in Amazonia, India and Melanesia. She was Associate Professor at the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, before returning to Cambridge as a lecturer in 1999. She is currently Director of the Duckworth Collection in the Archaeology and Anthropology Department. In 2001, she co-founded the University’s Leverhulme Centre for Human Evolutionary Studies, which promotes inter-disciplinary studies to prehistory and evolution. In 2005 she was awarded the Phillip Leverhulme Prize for her work on human evolution.
