Specialist in medieval English church architecture, with a particular interest in patronal context and the iconographical significance of architectural form and with special knowledge of China. A long career in publishing and interpretation (including work for the RCHM in England and English Heritage) and lecturing has encompassed archaeology and architecture worldwide. Edited and contributed to The Medieval Art, Architecture and History of Bristol Cathedral: An Enigma Explored (2011) and other scholarly work on buildings in the south west of England. Author of major popular publications, notably Cathedral: the Great English Cathedrals and the World that Made Them (2007); The Secret Language of Sacred Spaces: Decoding Churches, Temples, Mosques and other Places of Worship Around the World (2013). Research Associate and part-time tutor, University of Bristol. Member of Council, British Archaeological Association. Lay Canon (Keeper of the Fabric) at Bristol Cathedral.
