Ian secured his Ph.D. in 1979, and the Society of American Archaeology Presidential Recognition Award in 2001 and 2006.

Grounds for election
Professor Brown has carried out field work and excavated extensively in the American South for forty years. Has travelled worldwide researching ancient salt industries from Essex to China. Since 1991 he has worked as Curator of Gulf Coast Archaeology at the Alabama University of Natural History. Has also curated a permanent exhibition on American Indian culture in the Peabody Museum at Harvard University and managed a programme of temporary and permanent exhibitions at Alabama University Natural History Museum. From 2009-2013 he was president of the American Association of Gravestone Studies. Since 2002 Ian has directed a study of the archaeology of historic and modern cemeteries in Alabama. He served as a member of the National Historic Landmarks Committee of the National Park System Advisory Board between 1999 and 2005. Ian has published extensively on the archaeology of the American South, native American material culture, funerary archaeology, and ancient salt industries.
