Head of Building Conservation & Research at Historic England. Contributor to the VAG survey of historic timber-framed buildings. Researcher and author of extensive technical papers, articles and reports on building conservation. The main focus of research on the deterioration of historic building materials and remedial solutions. Manager of the former English Heritage Training Centre at Fort Brockhurst. He continues to provide oversight of the successor courses and lectures regularly at West Dean College. Series Editor for the 10 volume English Heritage Practical Building Conservation, main author of 2 of these and contributed text to all of the others.
