Cherry Knott first worked in town planning for Essex County Council and the Department of the Environment, where she was involved in townscape assessments and the designation of historic conservation areas. From 1974-9, she was Head of Conservation and Regional Services of the Crafts Council and later carried out major Crafts Council surveys: on craft courses in Adult Education and a socio-economic study of craftspeople in England, Scotland and Wales. In the 1980s she was the National Trust’s property manager at Sudbury Hall and curator of the Museum of Childhood. Her doctorate on the Vernon family of Sudbury Hall, whose rich archives had not previously been explored, was awarded by Warwick University, following the publication of her important book, George Vernon 1636–1702 ‘Who built this House’ Sudbury Hall, Derbyshire (2010). She was a member of the HLF’s South West regional committee and is currently an Associate Fellow in the History Department at Warwick University.
