Grounds for election

Tony Waldron is Honorary Professor of Human Osteology at the Institute of Archaeology, University College London, having previously been Professor of Environmental Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He has made substantial contributions to bioarchaeology, palaeopathology and palaeoepidemiology through his research, writing and teaching. His main interest is the study of joint disease, particularly osteoarthritis. He was the first to relate DISH (disseminated idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis - a spinal disease), to the monastic or other high-status way of life. He also reported the first authenticated case of rheumatoid arthritis in a medieval skeleton, thus confirming that the disease was present before the first clinical description in 1800. He is the author of Palaeoepidemiology: the Epidemiology of Human Remains, Palaeopathology and many other books and research articles and co-founded the International Journal of Osteoarchaeology.
