Grounds for election

James began as a field archaeologist but with a background in conservation stonemasonry having worked on listed buildings such as Newstead Abbey, Nottingham Castle, Wollaton Hall and other sites, he has become a leading buildings historian and his insight for detail has been a great contribution to MOLA work. He ran the Castles of Nottinghamshire Project, 2004-8 which looked at over twenty castles and semi-fortified manor houses in the county. He also ran a 12 year research project on the royal medieval palace at Kings Clipstone. Currently he is Project leader at historic building surveys at Knole for over three years alongside large scale projects at the Tower of London, Southwark Cathedral and the Palace of Westminster. He is particularly interested in graffiti and apotropaic marks. He has given numerous talks and has produced articles and books on buildings, particularly castles – another book on Clipstone is due out soon
