Grounds for election

Dr John Baker is a place-name scholar, archaeologist and historian who has contributed significantly to the understanding of landscape and society in Anglo-Saxon England. His doctoral thesis was published in 2006 as the monograph "Cultural Transition in the Chilterns and Essex Region, 350AD to 650AD" and he has subsequently published widely on etymology and on the wider significance of names for understanding the evolution of the landscape. His work is characterised by a rigorous onomastic approach that informs and is informed by archaeological and historical perspectives, and which tests the limits and possibilities of interdisciplinary study. He has been an Investigator on three major research projects since 2005: "Beyond the Burghal Hidage" and "Landscapes of Governance" (both funded by the Leverhulme Trust), and "The Place-Names of Shropshire" (funded by AHRC). From 2013 to 2016 he was co-editor of "Nomina", the journal of the Society for Name Studies in Britain and Ireland.
