Grounds for election
Dr John Naylor is the Portable Antiquities Scheme’s National Finds Advisor for Medieval and post-Medieval Coinage, based at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. He has made significant contributions to the study of trade and economics in Anglo-Saxon England, building on his Durham University PhD thesis which was published in 2004 as the monograph "An Archaeology of Trade in Middle Saxon England", and helped pioneer synthesising approaches to metal-detector finds through his post-doctoral work on the AHRC-funded project "Viking and Anglo-Saxon Landscape and Economy" (2004-2007). He combines academic expertise in early medieval archaeology and numismatics, and has published widely on aspects of economy and urbanism in the 7th to 9th centuries AD, and on early medieval, medieval and post-medieval coinage.
