Grounds for election
Dr Adriano Aymonino, an art and cultural historian, is a worthy candidate for Fellow as his work focuses closely on antiquity and antiquarians, most particularly the transmission and uses of antique imagery and sources. His work on the patronage of the 1st Duke and Duchess of Northumberland (soon to be published by Yale) is a survey both wide and deep of a key collection. His focus now is on the reception of the classical tradition in the Early Modern period. In 2013 he organised an exhibition on the 'Topham Collection as a source for British Neoclassicism' at Eton College Library and in 2015 he curated the exhibition 'Drawn from the Antique: Artists and the Classical Ideal' at the Teylers Museum in Haarlem and at the Sir John Soane's Museum in London. He is currently working on a new edition of the key text in this field, Haskell and Penny's 'Taste and the Antique' and on a project tracing the impact of antiquarian publications on 17th- and 18th-century British and European art.
