Grounds for election

Peter Purton's extensive research into medieval siege warfare and medieval military engineering has led to a reassessment of the nature of medieval siege machinery and the ways it was used. He has also investigated the use of mines and the role of miners in sieges and the evolution of medieval artillery defences and early warfare at private castles. He is the author of "A History of the Early Medieval Siege c.450-1200" and "A History of the Late Medieval Siege c.1200-1500" (both Woodbridge, 2010) and of "The Medieval Military Engineer" (being prepared for publication). He has lectured on aspects of medieval siege warfare at many venues, including the European Chateau Gaillard conferences, and has published several papers on those topics as well as conference reports and book reviews. He has been a member of the committee of the Castle Studies Group since 2002 and is a founder member and trustee of the Castle Studies Trust.
