Bettany Hughes is a distinguished broadcaster, writer and lecturer widely known for her documentary films and series including 'Engineering Ancient Egypt' (Channel 4 2009), 'Divine Women' (BBC 2012) and 'Genius of the Ancient World' (BBC 2015), and for her books 'Helen of Troy' and 'The Hemlock Cup: Athens and the Search for the Good Life'. She has made a very significant contribution to the public understanding and appreciation of history, ancient history and archaeology, and is long-standing advocate and supporter of classics and ancient history in schools, in recognition of which she has been awarded the Naomi Sargant Special Award for excellence in educational broadcasting, and the Historical Association’s Norton Medlicott Award for services to history. She is a Research Fellow of Kings College London, and an Honorary Fellow of Cardiff University. Her book 'Istanbul: a Tale of Three Cities' is to be published by Wiedenfeld & Nicolson in January 2017.
