Grounds for election

Eljas is an independent historian with an particular interest in commerce and trade in the Middle Ages. His PhD (Cambridge) examined 'The Relations between England and Flanders, 1066-c. 1200, with Special Reference to the Anglo-Flemish Treaties', resulting in the monograph 'Flanders and the Anglo-Norman World, 1066-1216' (CUP) and following postdoctoral research at the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies, Toronto and at the Department of History, King's College London. In his research he uses digital tools (such as GIS) for investigating historical datasets. He is currently working on inter-disciplinary GIS-led research using documentary and archaeological material to examine economic growth and the development of travel networks during the Middle Ages, with the Portable Antiquities Scheme: part of this research is funded by the SAL.
