Prof Weismantel is a major figure in the fields of archaeology and anthropology in Latin America and beyond. She is a leading scholar in the field of pre-Columbian art, the archaeology of the Andean South, sensory archaeology, and the archaeology and anthropology of gender and sexuality. She has worked and published extensively on pre-Columbian architecture and material culture with a focus on Moche ceramics and stone sculptures of Tiwanaku and Chavín de Huántar. Prof Weismantel has published two books and over twenty major articles on a range of topics in including material culture studies, the history of archaeology, and Moche ‘sex pots’. She is the recipient of numerous awards and honors including funding from the National Science Foundation, Fulbright, and National Endowment for the Humanities. She was a Templeton Foundation Fellow, working with the Çatalhoyük Project, based at Stanford University and Çatalhoyük, Turkey, in 2010-11.
