Grounds for election
An expert on castle archaeology and a former project manager with Dyfed Archaeological Trust, Neil practiced in west Wales and beyond for 25 years acquiring a specialist knowledge of the early medieval archaeology of Wales, and its later medieval history, archaeology and buildings. Key sites personally investigated include Whitland Abbey (Carms.), Pill and Caldey priories (Pembs.), Carmarthen Castle, Pembroke and Narberth Castles (Pembs.), and Talgarth medieval town (Brecs.). He delivered the Cadw-funded, pan-Wales Historic Churches and Early Medieval Ecclesiastical Sites surveys in west Wales. He has published extensively, in Archaeologia Cambrensis, Medieval Archaeology and other journals, and has contributed papers to several edited volumes. Carmarthen Castle: The Archaeology of Government (University of Wales Press 2014) was hailed as masterful and standard-setting (Arch. Camb. 163, 259-60), and as a major contribution, which has ‘transformed’ knowledge of the castle (Kenyon).
