Associate Professor Szabo is a leading expert on the role and use of shell in archaeological contexts, and has published extensively on this in the international arena. She has been the recipient of a number competitive large research grants and prestigious Fellowships. She is currently an Australian Research Council Future Fellow based at the University of Wollongong.
