Grounds for election

Dr Stephens is the Founder & Editor of 'The art world in Britain 1660 to 1735' - as featured in Salon issue 270. This is a huge free library of primary sources for the study of artists’ lives and the market in paintings and cultural goods during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. This vast project (there are 2 m. words of primary sources on the site) is the first digital resource in the UK concerned specifically with the market in art and antiquities. Its ground-breaking nature has been recognised by scholars across a wide range of disciplines and its academic rigour and usefulness to researchers has received high praise. He is the author of a catalogue raisonné of the works of 18th c. landscape artist Francis Towne (Paul Mellon Centre 2016) and was guest curator with Kim Sloan of the recent British Museum exhibition ‘Light, Time, Legacy: Francis Towne’s Watercolours of Rome’ which was extremely successful (with over 250,000 visitors) and received stellar reviews in the press.
