Grounds for election

After education as a chorister at St Paul’s Cathedral School, Simon studied English at Cambridge and went to the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He is an immensely distinguished actor, having appeared in many roles with the Royal National Theatre, Royal Shakespeare Company and others including the Royal Ballet. Distinctions include two Laurence Olivier Awards and two British Academy of Television awards. He is perhaps best known for his Shakespeare parts, and has persuasive views on the texts of Shakespeare’s plays and the way they were performed. Simon also generously performed an evening of recital from Shakespeare's history plays as a fundraising event for the Society's library in January. Simon has a lifelong interest in history, particularly the history of music. He has presented TV programmes such as ‘Monteverdi in Mantua’, ‘Sacred Victoria’, ‘Great Historians: Edward Gibbon’, and two acclaimed series on the history of ‘Sacred Music’.
