As well as music, Joscelyn Godwin has long had a special interest in Western esotericism and hermeticism, and has published widely on related subjects. He has also translated a number of books, among them the first full translation into English of Francesco Colonna’s The Strife of Love in a Dream, one of the most significant mystic humanist texts from the Italian Renaissance. Godwin was born at Kelmscott Manor, the second son of Edward and Stephani Scott-Snell (later Godwin), who were the first tenants of the Manor after its bequest by May Morris to the University of Oxford in 1939. He has done a great deal to preserve and promote their legacy. His book The Starlight Years (2015) describes the years that the Scott-Snells spent at Kelmscott Manor, 1940-8, and is of great importance for this part of the house’s story. In 2016 he made a significant gift to the Society of eleven works of art which provide a representative survey of his parents’ art during their years at the Manor.
