Adrian Tinniswood is the author of fifteen works of public history, beginning in 1989 with A History of Country House Visiting, a pioneering study of changing responses to art and architecture from the Middle Ages to the twenty-first century. Other works include His Invention So Fertile (2002), the first biography to consider Christopher Wren as scientist and architect; The Verneys (2007, shortlisted for the BBC/Samuel Johnson Prize for Non-Fiction), which drew on the vast Verney archive to reconstruct life for three generations of a landed Buckinghamshire family; and The Long Weekend (2016), which challenges common assumptions about the twentieth-century decline of the country house. Tinniswood has campaigned for greater public engagement with history as regional chair of the Heritage Lottery Fund (2001-10) and council member of the National Trust (2011-14); and in various university posts. He is currently Senior Research Fellow in History at the University of Buckingham.
