Grounds for election

Jessica Barker is a scholar of art and ideas in the later medieval period. She has a doctorate from the Courtauld Institute of Art and is a permanent lecturer in Art History in the School of Art, Media and American Studies at the University of East Anglia. Her scholarly publications to date are about monumental sculpture – particularly tomb sculpture – in relation to social context and the psychology of viewing. These publications, which are in leading peer-reviewed journals, deal with both English and Continental objects. She has also edited an important book dealing with the historiography of tomb sculpture, Revisiting the Monument: Fifty Years Since Panofsky's Tomb Sculpture (London, 2016), and has a monograph in press with Boydell and Brewer. Jessica’s work combines respect for antiquarian and empirical approaches with attention to current trends in critical theory. She is an intellectually versatile, curious scholar, and has rapidly become a leading voice in her field.
