Scholar working on the history of Afghanistan, Central Asia, the Silk Road, and the Roman Empire. His books include Afghanistan: A Companion Guide; Asia Overland (2005) Travels on the Trans-Siberian and Silk Roads(2010) and most recently (2017) Caesar's Footprints: Journeys to Roman Gaul. Numerous articles in learned journals on the above topics. He is also editor of the Journal of Asian Affairs. He has taught Classics at Eton College and Westminster School.
