Garden and Plants Historian
Grounds for election
As an independent scholar for 23 years, Dr Musgrave has made significant contributions to an emerging field of study. His first commission, researching the history of the Lost Gardens of Heligan, and devising the garden restoration policy, led to a role as a television presenter on ‘Lost Gardens’, and a successful writing career. He has written over 300 newspaper and magazine articles, been principal contributor to five books, and authored a further ten. Of the latter, The Plant Hunters, Empire of Plants, Paradise Gardens, Blue Orchid & Big Tree, Heritage Fruits and Vegetables and The Head Gardeners required significant original research; as does his forthcoming biography of Sir Joseph Banks for Yale University Press. He is currently in discussions to publish a comprehensive study of Islamic garden art. As an honorary Research Associate at Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, Dr Musgrave co-leads a project to digitise the archive of the plant hunter George Forrest.
