Grounds for election

Michael's present role includes the assessment, recording and interpretation of historic buildings and landscapes for various private and commercial clients, including English Heritage and the National Trust, together with the production of conservation management plans for larger sites. He is a highly proactive researcher in the field of early medieval archaeology, particularly elite power structures of the early middle ages, archaeology and architecture of the Anglo-Saxon church, the origins of castles in Western Europe, theoretical approaches to recording and interpreting standing buildings, vernacular buildings, public houses and popular culture. Michael has developed a high quality portfolio of publications including two highly regarded edited volumes (Churches and Social Power in Early Medieval Europe ed. with J. Sanchez Pardo 2015; Trees and Timber in the Anglo-Saxon World ed. with M. Bintley 2013). His forthcoming book on Anglo-Saxon towers will be a milestone.
