Christopher has just retired after 10 years as Curator of Decorative Arts at the Art Institute of Chicago (Previously Chief Curator, Minneapolis Institute of Art, Founding Curator of Architecture at the Carnegie Museum of art, Pittsburgh, and Curator of Decorative Arts at the Museum of the Rhode Island School of Design). Has lectured widely, on both sides of the Atlantic, and organised many exhibitions, including Buildings on Paper: Rhode Island Architectural Drawings 1845-1945 (1982) and, most recently, Ireland: Crossroads of Art and Design, 1690-1840 (2015). His numerous publications, ranging from architecture to furniture, from silver to folk art, not to mention the history of hotels, include the prize-winning American Furniture in Pendleton House (1987). He has served many bodies, whether as trustee, director or committee member, including the Association of Art Museum Curators, the Society of Architectural Historians, the Victorian Society in America and the Providence Athenaeum.
