Grounds for election

I wish to nominate John Allen as Fellow for his invaluable work on the parish churches of Sussex. He has made his research, begun in the 1970s, available to all on a widely used website, www.sussexparishchurches.org, where his scholarly and perceptive building histories and illustrated descriptions are all supported by meticulous referencing. The entries have far greater detail than those in book-format inventories and have the advantage of being searchable and updatable. John plans to develop the nationally consulted ‘Architects and Artists’ section into a similar list for the whole of England. Remarkably, John has achieved this whilst pursuing a full-time and now part-time civil service career. He has also published: Sussex Churches (Chichester, 1984); ‘Sompting Church’, SAS Newsletter 47 (Dec 1985); ‘Which Street? The Building of the New Milland Church: a Correction', The Victorian 9 (Mar 2002); and contributed to Antram and Pevsner, The Buildings of England. Sussex: East (2013).
