Dr Barton has had a diverse career as a parish priest, university chaplain and lecturer. His scholarly interests focus primarily on late medieval art, architecture, liturgy and nineteenth and twentieth century liturgiology. He has lectured widely on these subjects and published a number of peer-reviewed articles and book chapters. Between 2001 and 2006, he was instrumental in organising a ground-breaking series reconstructions in York and in Norwich of the medieval liturgy. His PhD in History of Art from the University of York (2004) was a study of the late medieval stained glass of Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire and he is an author for the Corpus Vitrearum Medii Aevi. With an interest in tourism and conservation, he also serves as a trustee of the Church Tourism and Visitor Association.
