Dr Swallow is an established scholar in the field of castle studies and landscape history, with extensive teaching experience in the same fields. As well as a number of articles she has edited and co-edited two volumes of the Royal Archaeological Institute Report and Proceedings, and is co-author of the English Heritage guide-book to Beeston Castle. Her thesis, Cheshire Castles in Context, is being prepared for publication, and a second book, The Earls of Chester and their Castles, c. 1070 - 1237, co-authored with Professor Howard Williams, is also forthcoming. She is a regular attendee of several conferences, including the Battle Conference and the IMC at Leeds, and has given papers at other gatherings, both in the UK and abroad; one of these papers is forthcoming in Chateau Galliard volume 28, Castles and Landscape (in 2018). She is currently lecturing at the University of Chester. Her special interest is the landscape history of the Welsh March, particularly its fortifications.
