Following a career in the Army, he began extensive documentary research and archaeological fieldwork to record and understand the Second World War defences in Somerset and adjoining counties. His military background enabled him to bring an important perspective to the reasoning behind these projects, the frequent changes made during their execution and the post-war myths that have grown up around them. These researches have contributed to over 600 entries in the Somerset HER and he has worked with Historic England to List 20 of these. The fundamental changes in our view of the strategic and tactical purposes of these defences can be seen in the book he co-authored with Chris Webster FSA and David Dawson FSA: "The Defence of Somerset and the Bristol Channel in the Second World War" (Somerset Archaeological and Natural History Society, 2011). He has also published several shorter notes and is currently preparing papers on camouflage schemes and a book on the Taunton Stop Line.
