His research has centred upon the origins and development of the Court of Exchequer, the office of the King's Remembrancer since 1164, the heraldry of Westminster Abbey, in particular the introduction of heraldry in the aisles in the 1260s, the use of the Chapel of the Pyx and its connections with the Trial of the Pyx, the place of the English silver penny in medieval English society
