Grounds for election
Professor Haour’s teaching and research concern the material expression of identity, combining historical, anthropological and archaeological approaches. Her specialism is the archaeology of West Africa, but she has developed this comparatively – looking at the borders of empires or the mechanics of long-distance trade in the medieval West African material record in relation to Europe and elsewhere. She has sixty publications, including six books, three of which are monographs: for example Outsiders and strangers: an archaeology of liminality in West Africa. Her current project, 'Cowries: an early global commodity', funded by the Leverhulme Trust, began earlier this year and runs until late 2018. It explores links between Africa and the Indian Ocean. Since joining UEA she has worked to make the University an internationally significant centre for African archaeology, aiming to highlight the cultural heritage and past of Africa, to dispel often negative portrayals of the continent.
