Grounds for election

Charlene Murphy is an archaeobotanist with research interests in the spread of agriculture and has conducted fieldwork in Canada, Europe and the Indian sub-continent. She is currently one of the researchers on the ERC Comparative Pathways to Agriculture project based in UCL. This is conducting primary archaeobotanic research focusing on East Asia and India. Her doctoral research explored archaeobotanic evidence from an insula at Pompeii and led to a book exploring the data and its limitations, and she continues to work on Mediterranean projects. Her publications include considerations of plant domestication in India and millet in the Roman world. She has also contributed entries on topics such as grapes and olives to encyclopaedic reference works. Other publications explore the potential that large archaeobotanic data sets have to contribute to understanding modern problems such as climate change, landscape ecology and more generally the impact of human behaviour on the environment.
