Over 40 years of scholarship in European prehistory, including excavations of major Neolithic sites in Poland, with focus on early farming societies, analysis of faunal remains, settlement patterns, social structure, and environmental archaeology. Contributions to archaeological thought on animal use, particularly dairy products and animal traction, and implications for social differentiation and agricultural dispersals. Authored books: Forest Farmers and Stockherders: Early Agriculture and its Consequences in North-Central Europe (1988), The Origins of Human Society (1999), The Barbarians (2017). Edited books: Case Studies in European Prehistory (1993), Ancient Europe: an Encyclopedia of the Barbarian World (2004), European Archaeology as Anthropology: Essays in Memory of Bernard Wailes (2017).
