Grounds for election
Josephine Atkinson has been Secretary-General of the International Institute for Conservation of Historic & Artistic Works since 2009. She is currently Editor-in-Chief of Dyes in History and Archaeology and has also been Assistant Co-ordinator, ICOM-CC Art Technological Source Research Working Group. From 1970 until 2014 she was at the Scientific Department of The National Gallery, London, latterly for two EU projects, ‘Synergy for a Multidisciplinary Approach to Conservation/Restoration’ and ‘Access, Research and Technology for conservation of European Cultural Heritage’ and before that undertaking research into methods and materials in Western European painting, into pigments, dyestuffs, paint structure and the light stability of pigments. She was cataloguer of Technical Library for the Scientific Department and in 2014 contributed to the National Gallery’s seminal exhibition Making Colour. She has contributed to over 60 published papers and reviews and has edited 13 books.
