Grounds for election

Coursework for his degree at Bishop Burton College introduced John to the wonders of Beverley Minster and mysteries of masons' marks. His study began with cataloguing masons' marks in the nave and aisles, concentrating on the piers. This was published as a chapter in 'Who Built Beverley Minster?' ed. Barnwell and Pacey, (2009). The work was developed over the next 7 years to include the whole building and was published as 'Of a Fair Uniforme Making, the Building History of Beverley Minster 1188 - 1736'( Blackthorn Press 2017, ISBN9 : 781906259471) The cataloguing of Masons' marks has extended to other major churches such as York and Lincoln Minsters and many East Riding churches. This has revealed Beverley masons working at other churches and raised questions about the sourcing of stone from the quarries either as block or as worked stones. Strong evidence has emerged for the re-evaluation of the dating of parts of Beverley and York Minsters. John lectures regularly and guides tours.
