Anna was part of the growing movement, after European Architectural Heritage Year 1975, to recognise the heritage importance of historic areas. Anna was in private practice until 1975, when she joined the Civic Trust, and joined English Heritage as a historic areas advisor. Later, at DCMS, she was head of the Government’s Conservation Unit and was responsible for CABE. Since 2002, she has worked in the Drury McPherson Partnership, with expertise in the understanding, protection and management of historic areas of all kinds. She has authored or co-authored a number of major guidance documents, including Conservation Area Practice 1993; Development in the historic environment 1995; Managing local authority heritage assets 2003; and Guidance On the management of conservation areas and On conservation area appraisals, both 2006. The later Conservation Principles 2008 sought, with some success, to influence wider planning policy leading up to the National Planning Policy Framework.
