Grounds for election

Joan Winterkorn is a renowned expert on literary and historical manuscripts. First as a Director of Bernard Quaritch, and subsequently in private practice, for 40 years she has appraised and valued countless archives, working for every important repository in Britain, as well as for private clients, the National Heritage Memorial Fund and the HLF. She played a significant part in brokering the transfer into public collections of material as diverse as the Churchill Archive, the Turing Papers, the Westmorland of Apethorpe Archive, and the Thatcher Papers, advising on heritage taxation and the Acceptance in Lieu Scheme. A member of the AIL Panel, and an Expert Adviser to the Export Reviewing Committee, she sits on the Council of the Friends of the National Libraries. She is a long-serving member of the Editorial Board of The Book Collector, with an extensive publications list, and has given many lectures. She was awarded the Benson Medal by the Royal Society of Literature in 2006.
