Well known for sensitive and scholarly repair of major historic buildings, he is Surveyor of the Fabric of Westminster Abbey and has recently completed a new access tower and museum galleries in the triforium. He is Consultant Architect for Westminster School, was joint architect for Southwark Cathedral precinct new buildings, and is Master-planner for St Albans School and Salisbury Cathedral School. He has worked on many major churches including Malmesbury Abbey, and his country house projects include Easton Neston, the Shanks Estate and Wotton House, all of which won awards. Mr Dean is author of numerous articles and several books, including 'Sir John Soane and the Country House' (1999), 'Sir John Soane and London' (2004) and 'Britain’s Buildings, Places and Spaces' (2008). He is a supporter of conservation and archaeological research and presented BBC2’s 'Restoration' series. He serves on bodies such as SAVE Britain's Heritage and Salisbury Cathedral Fabric Committee.
