Philip Wise has worked in a variety of local authority museums since 1983, initially as an archaeological curator and more recently as manager with Colchester and Ipswich Museums. For the last nineteen years he has been responsible for the heritage management of Colchester’s archaeological sites and monuments. From 2012 to 2014 he led on the heritage aspects of the successful bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund for the project to redevelop Colchester Castle and to increase access to the town’s wider heritage. Wise's current research interests are in the Anglo-Saxon, late medieval and early post-medieval periods in the East of England. Recently he has been researching the post-Dissolution history of St John’s Abbey in Colchester. His publications are numerous and diverse from individual object reports to urban overviews. Wise continues to be a stalwart of the Society For Museum Archaeology, being a committee member and transaction editor for seven years.
