Alastair Blanshard is the inaugural Paul Eliadis Professor of Classics at the University of Queensland. He has held positions at Merton College, Oxford, Reading University, and the University of Sydney as well as visiting fellowships at the Center for Hellenic Studies, Washington, Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, and the University of Cincinnati. He is an expert on Greek culture and has written extensively on the classical tradition from the early modern period until the modern day. His first book Hercules: A Heroic Life examined the impact of this hero on art, literature, and thought. Sex, Vice and Love from Antiquity to Modernity showed the enormous debt post-antique notions of desire and love owe to the classical world. His most recent work examines the role of 18th-century travellers to Greece in the creation of modern conceptions of antiquity. He is a series editor for CUP’s ‘Classics After Antiquity’ series and is an assistant editor for OUP’s Classical Receptions Journal.
